FAQ
Is TrueTopo free?
Section titled “Is TrueTopo free?”Yes. The base map, gazetteer search, core layer groups (mining, ownership, reference, environment), and Opportunity Score are free. No signup required. Fish Pack and Hunt Pack are sold à la carte (annual); TrueTopo Pro is a subscription that includes the rest of the premium layer groups, Snow Intelligence (where enabled), and all panel kits. See Expansion packs & pricing, Account & Billing, and Features.
Can developers use the data?
Section titled “Can developers use the data?”Yes. The platform is designed for developers. You can integrate datasets and services via:
- The API (gazetteer, tiles, intelligence endpoints)
- Future SDKs documented in the SDK section
Each dataset and layer page documents intended usage and any licensing constraints.
What makes TrueTopo different from other mapping platforms?
Section titled “What makes TrueTopo different from other mapping platforms?”TrueTopo focuses on remote environments and wilderness intelligence rather than urban navigation. The platform is optimized for questions like:
- “Is there legal access to this land?”
- “Is this trail public or private?”
- “Where are historic routes through this wilderness?”
The combination of open data, edge-native infrastructure, and regional intelligence makes TrueTopo distinct from generic basemap providers.
What regions does TrueTopo cover?
Section titled “What regions does TrueTopo cover?”The initial focus is Alaska and Arctic or wilderness regions, with phased expansion to North American wilderness and then global remote regions. See the Roadmap for the current expansion plan.
Can I contribute datasets?
Section titled “Can I contribute datasets?”Yes. TrueTopo welcomes contributions of high-quality, well-documented geospatial datasets that fit the platform’s focus. See Contributing for submission guidelines and validation requirements.
How often are datasets updated?
Section titled “How often are datasets updated?”Update cadence depends on the upstream source. Pipelines are designed to run on schedules (for example, via GitHub Actions) so that GNIS, hydrology, ownership, and access datasets can be refreshed without manual intervention. Each dataset page will document its expected update frequency.
How do I sign up?
Section titled “How do I sign up?”Go to id.truetopo.com and create an account. You can use email/password or OAuth (e.g., Google). Sign-in is required only for Pro subscriptions and expansion packs; base features work without an account. See Account & Billing.
How does payment work?
Section titled “How does payment work?”Payment is processed by Stripe. When you upgrade to Pro or unlock an expansion pack, the app redirects you to Stripe Checkout. After payment, your entitlements are updated and Pro features unlock. You can manage your subscription (payment method, invoices, cancel) via the Stripe Billing Portal. See Account & Billing.
What is Pro?
Section titled “What is Pro?”Pro is a subscription that unlocks premium layer groups (access, easements, infrastructure, mineral intel, fish, hunt, snow beta, aviation, marine, discovery), offline/waypoints/slope where available, and all panel kits (Miner, Field, Intelligence, Ski & Backcountry). See Expansion packs & pricing and Features for the full comparison.
